Food
irradiation: the status of Steritech's application to irradiate
food in Australia
Steritech Pty Ltd has applied to the Australia New Zealand
Food Authority(ANZFA) for permission to irradiate herbs, spices,
nuts, seeds and teas, under ANZFA Standard A17-Irradiation of
Food.
The Steritech application is the first ANZFA has received
since the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council approved
Standard A17, Irradiation of Food, for inclusion in the
Australian Food Standards Code in August last year.
Steritech has applied to use irradiation to destroy food
poisoning bacteria; control insect infestation; delay sprouting;
and destroy weed seeds.
On
11 October 2000, ANZFA sought comment on Steritech's application
from consumers, industry and government.
By the end of April, ANZFA had received 297 submissions from
265 individuals, 10 community groups, nine industry associations
and nine government agencies in Australia and New Zealand.
ANZFA has been evaluating this application with the
assistance of a steering group made up of representatives from
government (health and agriculture agencies), industry and
consumer groups from Australia and New Zealand, together with an
independent expert in the field.
After reviewing the submissions and the data submitted by
Steritech, ANZFA has sought additional information, which means
that the original timetable for the evaluation has been delayed.
ANZFA's Board of Directors expects that it will be able to
consider the full assessment report at the end of June, before it
is released for public consultation. This period of public
consultation is expected to take place in July and August.
A copy of the application and the preliminary issues paper,
and fact sheets with general information on food irradiation and
Standard A17-Food Irradiation, can be found on ANZFA's website (www.anzfa.gov.au
) or requested through the ANZFA offices in Canberra and
Wellington.
