E. coli O157:H7 : Japon

Entre mai et août 1996, E. coli O157:H7 a été responsable d'environ 10 000 maladies au Japon. La poussée épidémique la plus importante, à Sakai, a touché plus de 6 000 enfants d'âge scolaire. L'enquête menée sur la poussée a découvert que des germes de radis servis par l'école au cours du déjeuner constituaient la cause probable. Une semaine après la poussée épidémique à Sakai, trois travailleurs d'usine de Kyoto sont tombés malades. Le troisième est décédé à la suite d'une encéphalopathie liée au syndrome hémolytique-urémique aigu. En tout, les chercheurs ont trouvé 47 travailleurs affectés et ont lié la cause à une salade de germes de radis (constituée de germes de radis, de mayonnaise, de choux-fleurs et de pâte de poisson) servie avec le déjeuner dans la cafétéria de l'usine.
