Qu'est-ce qui nous empêche d'utiliser du brome en désinfectant des eaux recyclées à la place de la javel ? BRC ? Réglementation ?

Nous stérilisons de la boite de conserve (type 3/2, 4/4) dans des stérilisateurs en continue ( stork )

du brome ? Le brome est un gaz toxique (classé T+ très toxique), qui fut utilisé comme gaz de combat durant la première guerre mondiale.

c'est de plus un oxydant puissant qui réagit violemment avec de nombreux composés organiques

Une question subsidiaire pourrait être "pourquoi stériliser vos eaux recyclées ? Une petite pasto ne suffirait-elle pas ?"

Il doit s¹agir de l¹acide hypobromeux , un puissant oxydant qui agit comme désinfectant au même titre que l¹acide hypochloreux (libéré par la javel ou par les ³galets de chlore²).

Il est peu utilisé dans les piscine, plus dans les SPA, car il résiste plus à la chaleur que l¹acide hypochloreux.

Dans le message initial, l¹eau à désinfecter n¹est-elle pas celle que l¹on rajoute dans l¹autoclave après appertisation pour refroidir les conserves, en évitant la contamination du contenu par une entrée accidentelle d¹eau contaminée ? (Je ne connais pas précisément le procédé).

Bonjour,

Le brome fut effectivement utilisé pendant la première guerre mondial, seul ou sous forme de bromures divers, mais comme agent irritant lacrymogène.

Le chlore aussi fut utilisé, comme toxique suffocant. Et il est toujours utilisé comme agent désinfectant.. Il est vrai que sous forme gazeuse il est particulièrement toxique.

La petite expérience que l'on faisait en chimie au lycée autrefois pour montrer le dégagement de chlore est maintenant interdite.

Par ailleurs, c'est justement le caractère oxydant qui en fait un désinfectant (cf eau oxygénée, permanganate de potassium...).

Et le brome était et est me semble-t-il toujours utilisé pour désinfecter l'eau des piscines.

"le brome" dont on se sert pour l'eau des piscines n'est pas du brome, mais des sels de brome. Voir un exemple typique http://www.lagon.fr/f17/a18/produits-piscine/brome-piscine/brome-retard.html on parle de "brome retard", mais il s'agit de Bromochloro-diméthylimidazolidine-dione

On est donc bien d'accord. Le *brome* est bien trop dangereux pour être manipulé par les particuliers ou les services techniques des municipalités. Les sels de brome sont moins dangereux.

Je ne souhaitais pas faire apparaître de désaccord, désolé si cela a été perçu comme tel.

Mais même sous la forme que vous indiquez, le brome est-il pour autant anodin ?

Chez moi, les symptômes (passagers mais qui durent un certain temps quand même) : forte irritation au niveau des yeux, maux de tête et douleurs au niveau des bronches.

A moins que d'autres substances ne soient en cause ?

D'autres effets à long terme sont-ils possibles ?

effectivement , il s'agit d'eau servant a refroidir les conserves par ruissellement mais également l'eau contenue dans la colonne hydrostatique de refroidissement du stork .

Les conserves y séjourne pendant environ 20 min . Le risque de recontamination n'est pas nul . Nous traitons donc les eaux recyclé avec du chlore a raison de 0.05 mmg/l de clore libre résiduel (prélevé après traitement)

c'est peut être ce caractère corrosif qui empêche son utilisation dans les stérilisateurs ? .

Attention le brome est un liquide dans les conditions normales de température et pression.

Sous forme liquide, il est évidemment extrèmement toxique. Comme le chlore, étant un oxydant particulièrement puissant, il risque d'attaquer de nombreux métaux réducteurs. L'attaque dépendra des métaux.

Cette action oxydante explique son effet biocide.

Par contre, je ne pense pas qu'il ait été utilisé comme gaz de combat contrairement au dichlore rapidement remplacé par des gaz plus efficaces comme l'ypérite.

Au niveau des lacrymogènes, il me semble (mais cela n'est qu'un souvenir) que c'est l'action de HBr (acide bromhydrique) qui est utilisée et non pas le dibrome.

En fait le gaz Brome (Br2) a été utilisé par les’ grandes’ piscines jusqu’au début des années 90, lorsque les mines de potasse en ex- Allemagne de l’est fonctionnaient encore

Après la réunification, elles ont été fermées car déclarées trop polluantes – il n’y a depuis plus de production en Europe

Depuis seules les piscines en bord de mer utilisent encore le gaz, qu’'elles extraient alors directement du sel marin

Les piscines publiques ont alors conservé leur équipement et sont passées au chlore gazeux (Cl2)

Maintenant le brome est stabilisé sous forme solide ( et effectivement on ne parle plus de brome, mais de sel de brome…) , et proposé au grand public pour sa meilleure efficacité en présence d’un pH élevé (courant dans les eaux du réseau français et belge)

Les pastilles sont d’un coût élevé pour les piscines publiques, qui lui préfèrent le chlore (gazeux ou solide), moins cher . De plus, elles maitrisent pus facilement le pH

Je ne souhaite pas relancer une polémique sur l’innocuité ou pas ( !) du brome en ingestion… par précaution mieux vaut en effet le réserver aux spas et jakuzzis, et laisser les bassins de natation traités au chlore.

Ceci dit le brome est un excellent stérilisant et a aussi une rémanence intéressante en désinfection, et ce jusqu’à 8 de pH(alors qu’il vaut mieux rester autour de 7 pour une meilleure efficacité du chlore)
