La culture de plantes alimentaires pour produire du carburant nuit gravement à l'agriculture, selon le constat fait dans le centre des États-Unis où, sous l'effet des tarifs avantageux, les surfaces emblavées en maïs-éthanol ont fortement augmenté.
Il s'en est suivi une augmentation des populations du Puceron du soja, Aphis glycines (Hém. Aphididé).
